A shout out to the Power of Giving from ArtBeet Inc.
"This holiday season, my sister gave me the book, The Power of Giving, by Azim Jamal & Harvey McKinnon. It's an easy read with lots of familiar scenarios to ponder. The gift of a laugh, the gifts of value and virtue, and, of course, the gift of time. The one that really hit home with me, though, was the gift of "taking away." The authors' example was taking away some nights of television viewing (or even removing the whole set) and instead, building relationships with people around you, reading or playing board games, going for walks. I'd add to that, beginning a creative class or hobby.
I thought about all the nights that I come home and plunk myself on the couch for an hour or two, watching Criminal Minds or CSI (I've always liked who-dun-its), when I could be reading a book or WRITING a book myself! How many hours of my life have been dedicated to the tube? I don't even want to imagine.
So, here is my goal for the new year: Give myself the "gift of taking away" those things that lessen life's value and replace them with meaningful time with family and friends. I hope you can do the same."
Sincerely,
Sandi Van Sistine, director

"The Power of Giving is an authentic, inspiring, moving and practical book about abundance, hope and the basic truth of philanthropy: the love of humankind. Balanced perfectly, the authors shift seamlessly from reflection based in experience and supported by research, to memorable stories that illustrate their thesis, to advice about living, loving and giving that will inspire the reader in many ways. Wise, warm and wonderful — this book belongs in every home and office."

"Harvey and Azim elicit in their marvelous, important book, The Power of Giving, the best in human beings. Their suggestions, presented with humility and grace and courage, give each of us a renewed opportunity to think about the many, endless ways in which we all can and must be kind, compassionate and unstinting. In their hands, this passion to serve has become, effectively, a contagious art form, a 'virus' as they describe it. Please read this book and share it with everyone you know."
