What Can We Learn From Dr. King's Day Today?

Today is Martin Luther King Day in USA.  It is also a day away from the historical inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of USA.

Dr King's message underscored the importance of service and equality. Today, President Elect Obama, his wife and VP elect were attending nonprofit organizations in USA to mark Dr. King Day.  They were taking part in celebrating the message of "Giving" and "Service".

Dr King's dream and effort brought about what was at one point almost impossible - an African American's election as next President of USA. This took 40 years.

What other impossible goal can we achieve in the next 40 years?

If we all take the inspiration from Dr. King's message and give a little more towards eliminating poverty in the world we can eliminate ultra poverty completely or minimize it within the next 40 years. It is absolutely possible!

There are enough resources in the world to feed everyone. Just to put things in perspective and give you an idea, according to a United Nations study, every human being could be given food, shelter, sanitation, education and a comfortable life for no more money than that spent on annual golf memberships or one-third of the money spent worldwide on cigarettes. Now I am not saying give up golf (smoking, yes, if you can). What I am saying is that if we gave a little from the many things we do, or aim higher and share some of our success, we can attain what seem to be overwhelming goals.
