I had gone for surgery on May 14 at UBC hospital.
I met with an administrative assistant who went through the basics - care card, identification, procedure.
This was followed by a meeting with the nurse who helped with the intravenous and other medical formalities.
Then I met with the trainee, who explained the anesthesia options, followed by the anaesthetist who clarified few things.
Then I met the doctor, who made sure I was ready for the operation, before I was taken to the operating room. There I was given the Spinal Anesthesia and the next thing I knew was that the surgery was done!
Then I was taken to the recovery room for an hour before visitors were allowed.
I slept the night at the hospital and was attended by 2 or 3 nurses at different times checking on my progress.
In the morning a resident doctor came to speak with me about the release and what I should worry about whilst at home.
Finally another nurse came to make sure I was ready to go. I went through a dozen people at the hospital and the coordination between them was amazing! Each one knew exactly where things were left off.
My admiration for the medical staff was enhanced through this experience, and I realized that people in the medical field practice the power of giving all the time!
Also, I realized that teamwork is important, not only in sports but in all walks of life including the medical profession!
How about you? Reflect on the power of giving and teamwork that is probably happening at your work place and home!
